Today, I salute active duty Navy rescue swimmer Jeremy Way, who is stationed in Virginia Beach. Jeremy was having lunch the other day along the waterfront when a large splash hit the window he was sitting at in the restaurant, and Jeremy knew something was wrong. A car had driven off the boat ramp and into the water. After confirming there was someone inside the sinking vehicle, Way sprang into action. Despite the air temperature being below freezing and knowing the water would be cold, he didn’t hesitate. When Way reached the driver, he realized the situation was even more dire. Trapped inside the vehicle, the woman was visibly distressed and initially refused to unlock the doors. Water was pouring in, and eventually, as the vehicle slipped completely underwater, Way and others managed to free her just in time. Jeremy believes he was meant to be there at the moment, saying, “I’m an aviation rescue swimmer. I was here for a reason. ‘So others may live’ — it’s our motto.” Thank you for your bravery, Jeremy, and THANK YOU for your service.
