Today, the AWESOME is in St. George, South Carolina. When a rare winter storm hit on January 25, one homeless man and his loyal dog, Mowgli, had nowhere to turn. That’s when the town of 1,800 residents showed the true power of community. Carlos Canales first spotted Chris Brannon and Mowgli shivering in the freezing rain. “He was out there shivering,” Canales recalled. He gave Brannon all the cash he had and returned later with hot food—but couldn’t shake the image of icicles forming on Brannon’s beard. Determined to help more, Canales posted on Facebook to ask the community for assistance. The response was immediate. Once located, the town quickly rallied. Funds were raised to keep Brannon and Mowgli in a nearby hotel for the week, while over 70 acts of generosity poured in—cash donations, warm meals, and supplies for the pair.
