Today, the AWESOME is in Georgia. At a Publix in Acworth, Georgia, customers wait 30-40 minutes in line for this one cashier, and they are happy to do it. His name is Michael Masterangelo. Michael has an intellectual disability and has worked at the same Publix for 10 years. And in that decade, he’s turned a regular checkout lane into something much more. Store Manager Courtney McGuinness says you can’t train what Michael brings to the store each day. But Michael isn’t just brightening people’s days. He’s also making a major impact. He has been part of Special Olympics since he was 7 or 8 years old, and this year, he set a personal fundraising goal right at his register. Between scanning groceries and counting change, he invited customers to donate, and they did. In less than a week, he raised more than $31,000 — more than some districts in the region.
and THAT’S AWESOME
