Today, the Awesome is in Cleveland, Ohio. Every afternoon around 3 p.m., a small group of construction workers makes one last stop before heading home. They climb to an upper floor of a building under construction, look toward a nearby hospital window, and wave—often forming heart shapes with their hands. On the other side of the glass, 4-year-old Brinley Wyczalek is waiting, returning the heart gestures back to them. This is a bright spot in her day as she and her family wait for a new heart. Brinley has been waiting for a transplant for more than 100 days. The workers—who are helping build the Cleveland Clinic’s new Neurological Institute—decided to take the gesture even further. They have made different signs like “Praying for you and your family. Keep fighting.” They also organized donations for Brinley, including coloring books, games, a signed hard hat, and even a stuffed bear twice her size. What they are building is joy and light in a dark and difficult time, and every day around 3 pm, Brinley gets to be a kid again….and THAT’S AWESOME
