Today, the AWESOME comes from Rhode Island, where we are reminded that not all heroes wear capes. Seven-year-old Sameer Santana is being hailed as a hero after saving a choking classmate at Stephen Olney Elementary School in Rhode Island. During snack time on April 9, Sameer noticed fellow student Jabril choking on an apple slice. While the teacher called for help, Sameer quickly sprang into action and performed the Heimlich maneuver, a skill he learned in kindergarten health class. The apple slice was successfully dislodged, preventing a potentially dangerous situation. Sameer’s mother said she was shocked her son knew how to respond so calmly under pressure. The town of North Providence later honored him with a Citizen’s Award and named him honorary rescue captain for the day, and THAT’S AWESOME.
