For families with a critically ill or injured child, the hardest part is often not just the diagnosis — it is everything that comes with it. Long drives. Hotel bills. Sleepless nights. Time away from work. The overwhelming fear of being far from a child who needs them most. That is where Ronald McDonald House Charities Wichita steps in, providing more than a place to sleep. It provides comfort, stability and hope during some of life’s most difficult moments.

The organization’s mission is simple but powerful: to alleviate the worry and expense of finding a close, comfortable and affordable place for families to stay while their child receives medical care. Every room, every meal and every supportive conversation helps families focus on what matters most — being together.

In 2024 alone, RMHC Wichita served 1,287 families and provided 6,355 overnight stays for parents and caregivers whose children were receiving treatment in Wichita hospitals. Volunteers also helped provide 284 meals, giving families one less thing to think about during stressful days. On average, families stayed 10 nights, though many remain much longer while children undergo surgeries, treatments or recovery. It costs the charity about $150 each night to house a family.

That $150 figure has become more than a statistic. It represents peace of mind for exhausted parents who no longer have to sleep in hospital waiting rooms or spend money they cannot afford on hotels and gas. It means siblings can remain close together. It means families can share dinners, prayers and quiet moments while facing medical uncertainty.

Despite the recognizable name, many people are surprised to learn RMHC Wichita does not receive federal, state or local tax dollars and is not a United Way agency. While McDonald’s remains a founding partner and longtime supporter, the Wichita chapter relies heavily on community donations, sponsors, volunteers and fundraising events to continue serving families.

One of the organization’s biggest nights of the year is quickly approaching.

The 2026 RMHC Wichita Annual Gala will take place June 27 at INTRUST Bank Arena in downtown Wichita. This year’s theme, “A Night in Paradise,” promises an evening of elegance and purpose, featuring auctions, drinks, live entertainment and a seated dinner — all benefiting families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Activities begin at 6 p.m., with semi-formal attire encouraged and valet parking available. (RMHC Wichita)

Organizers say the gala is more than a fundraiser. It is a celebration of community compassion. Every ticket sold directly supports families facing medical crises. In fact, one $150 gala ticket covers the cost of a family’s one-night stay. (RMHC Wichita)

The annual event has become one of Wichita’s premier charity gatherings, bringing together business leaders, volunteers, donors and families whose lives have been changed by the organization’s support. Funds raised during previous galas have provided thousands of nights of housing for families in need. (RMHC Wichita)

For parents walking through unimaginable circumstances, Ronald McDonald House Charities Wichita offers something priceless: the chance to stay close. And for one night in June, the Wichita community will gather to ensure those doors remain open for every family who needs them.
