Sedgwick County commissioners have approved an agreement with the Wichita Crime Commission for an education campaign on the dangers of fentanyl. The campaign will be aimed at middle-school and high school students and their parents.
Sheriff Jeff Easter presented details of the agreement to commissioners on Wednesday. The Sheriff’s Office, the Wichita Police Department, the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Coalition, the Youth Educational Empowerment Program, and other groups have been developing a plan for education in the community. Easter said the plan is to develop a social media campaign with Snapchat, Spotify and TikTok as well as geofencing around area schools.
The campaign will create 15-second videos with messages about fentanyl, and it will run during April and May, and again in September and October.
Sedgwick County will contribute $49,000 to the campaign and the total budget will be around $100,000.
County Commissioner David Dennis said the campaign will inform students and parents about the dangers from pills coming out of Mexico that are laced with fentanyl, and the messages will carry the theme of “one pill can kill.”
