Star Spangled Salute: A Veteran and his Birds

Star Spangled Salute: A Veteran and his Birds

Star Spangled Salute: A Veteran and his Birds

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors disabled Gulf War Veteran Robert Vallieres.  Robert suffered a head injury and nearly died from an aneurysm while in Kuwait.   He was exposed to chemicals and suffers from PTSD.  Despite all the challenges he has found purpose.  Typically, 3 times a week, 57-year old Robert loads a heavy pack on his back and climbs to reach cliffs and quarries to get a glimpse of the birds he is helping track and rehabilitate.  Robert has volunteered for the New Hampshire Audubon Society for 25 years, helping the peregrine falcon and bald eagle, two species nearly wiped out by the pesticide DDT in the 1960’s.  The birds are making a comeback and in turn, so is Robert.  Thank you Robert for your service.
