Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Lt. Cmdr Joshua Straka of Wichita. Joshua is one of the sailors continuing a 123-year tradition of service under the sea aboard USS Springfield, operating out of Naval Base Guam. Joshua, a 2002 graduate of Northeast High School and a 2006 and 2008 graduate of Wichita State University, joined the Navy 11 years ago. “I come from a family with a rich history of military service,” said Joshua. “I joined well after college with a career at Boeing. I needed something different.” Joshua went on to say skills and values learned in the Navy are similar to those found in Wichita. “Growing up I learned to do the right thing, even though no one may be looking, “never give up, never quit.” Today, Joshua serves as an engineering officer. “Service to country is one of the greatest things in my life I can say I did,” added Joshua. “It protects our country, way of life and my family.”
