Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors 34-year old Army veteran and amputee KC Mitchell. An IED in Afghanistan took his leg, but it took a much greater toll. His pain was inescapable and his days were spent home alone playing video games, eating Doritos and OxyContin, chasing it with a Rolling Rock. It wasn’t until a trip to Disneyland, that things changed. He was there with his wife and 2-year old daughter and instead of celebrating, KC said he would stand in line, deal with raging pain, get anxious, sit and sulk and then eat more Oxy. When the trip got cut short he realized he wasn’t living up to the person and the dad he wanted to be. He went home, dumped the oxy and found powerlifting as a way to battle his pain and depression. A year later on his daughter’s 3rd birthday he said he dominated Disneyland for 3 days. Not only that, in 2017 he became the first amputee to compete in a full powerlifting competition. Way to go KC and thank you for you service.
