Today, JJ’s Star Spangled Salute honors Anthony, Kansas Veteran Don Halbower. In 1952, 6 foot 3 inches was the maximum height for Marine pilots. Don, was 6′ 6″, but he was determined to take to the skies. With the help of his recruiter, Don played to his strengths, electronics. Since he already worked for Boeing out of high school, helping build B-47’s, it was an easy solution. Don was trained in radio, radar and other electronics and was soon assigned to VMFA 531, a Marine night fighter attack squadron called “The Grey Ghosts”. Thank you for sharing your story Don and THANK YOU for your service.
