Two Sedgwick County Sheriff Deputies and a citizen are credited with the rescue of a person from the van that ended up upside down in the KDOT West lake on Tuesday.
Shortly after 7pm, Deputy Harris saw people standing on the ramp from south I-135 to south I-235, and that’s when he saw the overturned van in the lake. Deputy Harris and a citizen went into the lake and worked to break windows to get a person out of the van. Deputy Kingery arrived and helped get the unresponsive person out of the van. Deputies provided life saving measures until EMS arrived. The person was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Deputy Harris was also taken to a hospital for injuries he received during the rescue.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
