The Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Independence police and the Montgomery County sheriff’s office are investigating a fatal shooting that was reported Saturday evening.
Independence police received a 911 call around 6 p.m. from a citizen who reported hearing gunshots. Officers found a teenage girl who had been shot near the intersection of Main Street and Laurel. She was later identified as 19-year-old Kimberly Meeks of Coffeyville.
Police said Meeks was walking with a man in the area when someone fired shots from a car. The 19-year-old man who was with Meeks ran from the area.
