Oklahoma is one step closer to hosting the first religious public charter school in the country.

The Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board voted three-to-two on Monday to approve a contract with St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School in Oklahoma City.

The school’s application was approved in June, but its planned 2024 opening could be changed due to lawsuits that Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond says could end up in the U.S. Supreme Court.

A joint statement was released by several groups involved in the lawsuits, including Americans United for Separation of Church and State, The American Civil Liberties Union, and the Education Law Center.

“The board is ignoring the legal and public education experts, religious freedom advocates, and Oklahoma taxpayers who all oppose St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School – a public school that plans to discriminate against students, families, and staff and indoctrinate students into one religion. Our plaintiffs are fighting the approval of St. Isidore in court because they are committed to public schools that welcome and serve all Oklahomans.”
