The U.S. is pushing for the release of all hostages held captive by Hamas. This comes after two American hostages were released to Israeli authorities.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said ten additional Americans are unaccounted for in the conflict, and some are believed to be among the approximately 200 hostages being held by the Palestinian militant group in Gaza. Those being held captive were taken prisoner when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel earlier this month.
President Biden says he’s “overjoyed” by the release of the two Americans. In a statement released by the White House, the President noted the release of all U.S. citizens held captive remains the top priority of his administration.
The Palestinian militant group cited humanitarian reasons for letting the American mother and her daughter from Chicago go today due to the mother’s poor health. The two are reportedly now on their way back to Israel after being handed over to the Red Cross in Gaza.
