The Kansas Department of Transportation is having an online meeting Wednesday to talk about possible expansion of passenger rail service into the state.

Amtrak has been offering service from Fort Worth, Texas to Oklahoma City, and there have been discussions among Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas officials about an expansion of the service.   The proposed expansion would extend to Newton to connect with the Southwest Chief route that runs from western Kansas to Kansas City.

Federal approval is needed for the plan and then KDOT would work out a detailed outline early in 2024.

The virtual meeting will be held from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 8th on the web site www.ksdot.gov/passrail
