The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said an inmate died Thursday from medical issues.
The Sheriff’s Office said the 37-year-old man had irregular lab results and an EMS unit was called to take him to a hospital, but he became unresponsive before the ambulance got to the jail. Medical staff and EMS personnel provided medical treatment, but he was pronounced dead shortly before 3 a.m.
The Sheriff’s Office said the inmate had a chronic health problem that he was being treated for. The preliminary cause of death is unknown and an autopsy has been ordered. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation will work with sheriff’s investigators to look into the death. At the request of family members, the inmate’s name was not released. He was being held at the jail on a $150,000 felony warrant for contempt of court, and he had been in the jail since Tuesday.
This is the 5th in-custody death at the jail for 2024.
