Firefighters were called to the former Treatco building in north Wichita around 4 a.m. Thursday.

Multiple fires were found in the factory near 21st and Broadway but crews had to stay outside because because the building is not stable.

It is not clear what started the fire or how much more damage was done.   Wichita fire marshal Stuart Bevis said a 2011 fire caused significant structural damage to the building and crews stayed outside because of concerns over the stability of the building.  He said crews from the city, Sedgwick County and McConnell Air Force Base were at the scene, working to get water to areas they can get to, but there are some parts of the building that can’t be entered safely.   He said the fire may be burning for some time.

Crews remained at the building throughout the day. Smoke from the fire was hanging low because of the weather, and several people have reported a bad smell with the smoke. Anyone in the area is advised to stay clear of the smoke if possible.
