The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office will be involved in a statewide DUI enforcement effort for the New Year’s holiday travel period.

The Kansas Department of Transportation will launch the New Year’s Taking Down DUI enforcement campaign and it will continue through January 2nd.   Law enforcement agencies across the state will be watching for impaired drivers.

The Sheriff’s Office urges drivers to leave their vehicles at home if they plan to consume alcohol or other impairing substances. Instead, use a designated driver, rideshare, or other transportation options to get home safely. Party hosts are encouraged to help their guests plan and ensure everyone has a sober ride home.

Anyone who observes a driver they believe to be impaired is encouraged to call 911 immediately.  Law enforcement agencies say reporting a suspected impaired driver could save a life.

The Kansas Highway Patrol, the Kansas Turnpike Authority and KDOT are reminding drivers about the impacts of impaired driving.  Last year from Dec. 19, 2023-Jan. 1, 2024, KDOT records indicate nine people died in Kansas crashes.  Impairment, including drugs and alcohol, was involved in 19 crashes where 12 people were injured.
