The City of Newton is working with state officials to look into the deaths of dozens of geese at a wetlands area, and it’s believed the deaths are the result of bird flu.
The dead geese have been reported over the past few weeks at the wetlands on Southwest 14th Street. Newton officials said city staff will be working with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. The dead birds will be left where they are “to let nature take its course.”
In a social media post, the city called attention to advice from KDWP that if you see a migratory bird acting abnormally, you should report it to their biologists at 620-342-0658. Do not handle any birds that appear sick or injured. If you have to handle a dead bird, wear disposable gloves, double bag it, and place it in your trash cart before disinfecting your hands and clothes.
