Today, I salute the brave men and women, the first responders, the everyday heroes, who risked their lives and gave their lives 24 years ago during the terrorist attacks on 9/11. The attacks that day killed 2,977 people, injured thousands more, and gave rise to substantial long-term health challenges for so many. It remains the deadliest terrorist attack in history as well as the deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement personnel in American history, killing 343 and 72 members, respectively. This year, on Sunday, the 2025 Wichita 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Ruffin Epic Center will be open not only to firefighters but also to the public, in memory of the 343 firefighters. Anyone who wants to step forward and carry the name of a fallen hero, and climb a total of 110 floors, as a way to preserve their memory and sacrifice. To all climbing and to all first responders, thank you, and to the 373 firefighters and 72 members of law enforcement, we will never forget your sacrifice.
