Today, the AWESOME is in Fort Lupton, Colorado. Hank Ford is an Army and Marine Veteran who served 20 years in the military, including Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom, and has faced a long battle with PTSD. The one constant through his PTSD is his 3-year-old service dog named Tommy, who has never left his side. It’s safe to say Tommy has saved his life and helped with his transition back to civilian life. Hank calls Tommy the light at the end of the tunnel. Now, Hank can say Tommy saved his life a second time. This past February, after Ford’s wife left for work, Tommy suddenly began barking, pawing, and jumping on him—refusing to let him sleep. Tommy didn’t stop. He kept pawing at Ford’s chest until Ford recognized the problem—his heart was racing out of control. He rushed to the hospital, where doctors confirmed his atrial fibrillation was so severe he might not have woken up on his own, or he could have suffered a massive stroke. His heart had to be shocked back into rhythm. Hank knows that if not for Tommy, he wouldn’t be alive, and THAT’S AWESOME.
