Today, I salute Vietnam Veteran Daryl Van Dyne. In 1963, Daryl was cut from the junior high basketball team, and his dad suggested he try scouting, so he did. Over time, he became more and more involved in the scouts. After his time in Vietnam, in 1975, he temporarily filled in as Scoutmaster for troop 222. What was supposed to be a fill-in position resulted in a lifelong passion for scouting. On average, most Scoutmasters stay about 5 years, but Daryl was recently celebrated with cake and a party to honor his 50 years of service to the Scouts. Daryl said his only regret is when a boy attends a meeting or two and doesn’t end up committing to the Boy Scouts. He said that always broke his heart because there are so many opportunities and learning experiences available in the program. Thank you for being a leader of young men in the Scouts for 50 years Daryl and THANK YOU for your service.
