Today, the AWESOME is in Minnesota. Mebal Kaanyi was finishing her afternoon bus route when she spotted a little boy running down the street. He was crying, dressed only in underwear and a short-sleeve shirt, and had no shoes or jacket. —despite the cold weather. What Kaanyi didn’t know at the time was that the child’s aunt had just called 911 to report him missing. As she parked her bus, she watched in horror as the boy ran toward a lake, into the deep section, and he began to struggle. Despite her intense fear of water and the fact that she had never swum in her entire life, she was determined to help him. Kaanyi grabbed his hand, pulled him to safety, and carried him back to her school bus, where he was wrapped in towels until first responders arrived. She is being hailed a hero; however, Kaanyi humbly said, “We need to live in a society whereby we care for one another,” and THAT’S AWESOME.
