Today, I salute Vietnam Navy Veteran Steve Alfrey. While U.S. ground troops battled on the front lines of the Vietnam War, an elite group of the U.S. Navy worked below the surface in the deep waters of the Pacific Ocean. Steve was one of those sailors. Long after his service, Steve continues to work hard to honor other Veterans. Last year, he was instrumental in bringing a new bench to the Gage Park War Memorial. Now Steve and other Kansas submarine Veterans are working on another idea. They want to bring pieces of the now decommissioned USS Topeka back to the capital city for a permanent display. It will take money and public support, but they are determined. Thank you for keeping history alive, Steve, and THANK YOU for your service.
