Today, the AWESOME is in Nebraska. In January 2021, pediatric anesthesiologist Dr. Amy Beethe encountered 4-year-old True, who was alone in a hospital room awaiting heart surgery for hypoplastic right heart syndrome. Moved by his situation, Dr. Beethe and her husband, Ryan, decided to adopt True, providing him with a loving home. Recognizing the importance of keeping families together, they also adopted True’s sister, Laney. Additionally, they facilitated the adoption of True’s four other siblings by relatives and colleagues, ensuring the siblings remained connected. Now 9 years old, True still needs a heart transplant, but he is thriving with his new family, and THAT’S AWESOME.
