It’s not at all uncommon for actors to play way outside their age range. Here’s a list of actors who played characters that are either younger or older than their actual age:

1.  Angelina Jolie:  She was 29 when she played Colin Farrell’s mother in “Alexander”. They’re less than a year apart in real life.

2.  Jennifer Lawrence:  She was 21 when she played a widow in “Silver Linings Playbook”.  Her character was supposed to be in her mid-to-late thirties.

3.  Andrew Garfield:  He was 27 while playing 17-year-old Peter Parker in “The Amazing Spider-Man”.  He was 30 for the sequel.

4.  Amy Poehler:  She was 33 when she played Regina George’s mom in “Mean Girls”.

5.  Keira Knightley:  She was 18 when she played a newlywed in “Love Actually”.

6.  Maggie Smith:  She was 56 when she played 92-year-old Wendy Darling in “Hook”.

7.  Alan Rickman:  He was 54 when he played 32-year-old Snape in the first “Harry Potter” film.  He was 64 in the final film, when Snape would’ve been 38.

8.  Olivia Newton-John:  She was 29 when she played teenage Sandy in “Grease”.

9.  Brad Pitt:  He was 39 when he played Achilles in “Troy”.  Achilles’ age during the Trojan War is believed to be anywhere between 12 and his twenties.

10.  Meryl Streep:  She was 58 when she filmed “Mamma Mia!”, but her character is believed to be around 43.
