Keith Urban is proving once again that he’s never been afraid to take creative risks. The Grammy-winning country star has stepped into a new sonic lane with his upcoming album Flow State (out June 12), a yacht rock-inspired project that blends smooth, nostalgic vibes with his signature musicianship. Known for chart-topping country hits and electrifying guitar work, Urban is now embracing the laid-back sounds of soft rock classics, reimagining iconic songs while adding his own modern touch.
The album, set for release in June, features mostly covers of beloved yacht rock staples, but includes one standout original track: “We Go Back.” The song pairs Urban with Michael McDonald, whose soulful voice helped define the genre decades ago. Urban actually wrote the track years earlier and always envisioned McDonald on it—an idea that finally came full circle when the two connected and recorded together.
“We Go Back” captures the warm, reflective spirit of yacht rock, blending smooth melodies with themes of nostalgia and connection. It also serves as the emotional centerpiece of Flow State, which Urban describes as a feel-good, “easygoing seaside soundtrack” meant to bring people together.
With this project, Urban expands his already diverse catalog, showing fans a different side of his artistry while honoring a genre rooted in timeless feel-good music.
