Kansas Senator Jerry Moran announced Thursday that the remains of Marion County native and priest of the Diocese of Wichita, Father Emil Kapaun, have been identified.

Moran received the news from the POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

Kapaun served as an army chaplain during WWII and the Korean War. He was taken as a prisoner of war in 1951, and continued to minister to Americans as a POW before his death on May 23rd of the same year.

Moran had introduced legislation to bestow Father Kapaun with the Presidential Medal of Honor, which was awarded in 2013.
