Evergy received several customer reports of individuals making call to customers claiming to be with the company. They have been asking customers for immediate payment to avoid service disconnections.
Evergy issued a statement saying the its employees will never make call requesting payment on the same day of a disconnection.
The company said that the caller claims to be an Evergy Customer Service Representative and attempts to acquire credit card or other personal information, in some cases telling the customer a check has bounced or they have a past due bill. Imposters will also often ask customers to use a pre-paid card, which Evergy says they will also never ask for as a form of payment.
If you receive call like this, you can always verify that the person is indeed an Evergy employee by asking for company identification, or by calling the Customer Contact Center. If you can’t verify that you’re speaking with an Evergy employee, do not give out personal information.
