Challengers won most of the races for Wichita City Council and school board seats in Tuesday’s general election.
In the unofficial returns from Tuesday’s vote, Council member Brandon Johnson was one of only two incumbents to win a new term in office. He won over challenger Myron Ackerman in the District 1 race. Johnson had almost 79 percent of the vote with 3,943 votes, while Ackerman had 1,036 votes for just over 20 percent.
Mike Hoheisel defeated incumbent Jared Cerullo in the District 3 contest. Hoheisel had 1,549 votes for just under 50 percent of the vote, while Cerullo had 1,480 votes for just over 47 percent. The margin is 69 votes.
Maggie Ballard ousted incumbent Cindy Claycomb in District 6. Ballard captured 3,625 votes for just over 54 percent, while Claycomb had 3,014 for just over 45 percent.
In the school board races, challengers won three of the four open seats.
The District 1 race had Diane Albert over incumbent Ben Blankley. Albert had 14,775 votes for more than 56 percent. Blankley had 11,345 votes for just over 43 percent.
In District 2, incumbent Julie Hedrick was the winner, defeating challengers Brent Davis and Justin Bjork. Hedrick received 12,958 votes for just over 49 percent of the vote. Davis had 11,742 for 45 percent. Bjork had 1,339 votes for 5 percent.
The District 5 race saw Kathy Bond winning over incumbent Mia Turner. Bond had 13,920 votes for 53 percent, and Turner had 12,044 for 46 percent.
Challenger Hazel Stabler won the District 6 seat over incumbent Ron Rosales and challenger Holly Terrill. Stabler captured 11,545 votes for just over 44 percent, while Rosales had 7,807 for almost 30 percent and Terrill had 6,721 for almost 26 percent.
In Sedgwick County, voter turnout was 14.89 percent.
The canvass of the general election results is scheduled for November 12th. That’s when provisional ballots will be counted and the results will be made official.
