Sedgwick County to increase COVID-19 testing capacity

The Sedgwick County Health Department says more county residents can be tested for the coronavirus.

Health director Adrienne Byrne says more supplies have been provided by the state and the county’s drive through location on West Central can now sample more than 100 people per day.

Byrne said the criteria for testing has changed.  People don’t have to be over 60 years of age and they have to have a fever and two other symptoms of COVID-19.  She said people with symptoms can call the United Way’s 211 information line for an initial screening.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reports more than 1,400 Sedgwick County residents have been tested, and the county health department has sampled more than 270 residents.

Byrne said the county still has a shortage of swabs for sampling, and efforts are being made to get more swabs from suppliers.
