Kansas corrections officials said Monday an inmate has died at the El Dorado Correctional Facility, and he tested positive for COVID-19.

This is the first coronavirus-related death at the El Dorado prison, and it’s the 13th death in the state corrections system.

The inmate tested positive for the virus on December 28th and was transferred to the hospital on January 2nd.   Corrections officials said he was a 65-year-old man who had underlying medical conditions.

The inmate was serving a 294-month sentence for attempted first-degree murder and second degree murder.  He had been in the prison system since September, 2010.
