Wichita schools change winter weather procedures

The Wichita school district has made changes in its winter weather protocol for the rest of the school year, because of a shorter school calendar resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are no snow days available for a traditional day off, so when weather conditions would affect safe travel to school buildings, students will have an independent learning remote day from home.   Parents and staff will be notified early in the morning when a remote learning day is declared.

Elementary students will log into Teams at their school’s start time to get assignments for the day, and they will log in again at midday to check progress.

Middle and high school students will follow the remote Wednesday learning schedule, regardless of which day the winter learning day is declared.  Students will log into Teams for each of their scheduled class periods to record attendance and get instructions.

Meals for the day will be available for families to pick up from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Alvin Morris Administrative Center at 903 South Edgemoor, and the School Service Center’s Food Production Center at 3850 North Hydraulic.

The district will send communication to students, parents and staff through email, voice and text, along with social media, the district’s web site and local media.

The district has activated the protocol with snow expected in the overnight forecast for the Wichita area.
