A former Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputy who fled the country after being investigated for child sex crimes appear in front of a Sumner County judge on Wednesday.

Derick Chandler is being charged with five counts including sexual exploitation of a child, aggravated indecent liberties with a child and aggravated indecent solicitation of a minor under 14 years old.

The Wellington Police Department began an investigation against Chandler in August of 2018. If convicted, the charges a maximum sentence of life in prison.

While the investigation was underway, Chandler then fled the country to Istanbul, Turkey and it was believed that he was joining the French Foreign Legion. Chandler was subsequently extradited from Budapest, Hungary to the United States on Tuesday.

Chandler’s bond is currently set at $1 million and he is due back in court on April 1 at 11 a.m.
