South KS designated a Defense Manufacturing Community

Southern Kansas has been designated a Defense Manufacturing Community by the Department of Defense.

The effort to gain the designation was led by Wichita State’s National Institute for Aviation Research, making southern Kansas one of 11 DMCs across the U.S. Thanks to the DMC designation, the region is able to receive $5-million.

“The designation and subsequent funding will support and grow Wichita’s portfolio of DoD programs,” said John Tomblin, Wichita State’s senior vice president for Industry and Defense Programs and NIAR executive director. “It will provide additional resources for cutting-edge programs aimed at strengthening the military and ensuring the safety of the warfighter; and solidify Wichita’s growing reputation as a primary resource hub for the DoD.”

The Southern Kansas DMC will specialize in high-demand weapon systems that require high-temperature components and hypersonic capabilities to support critical new platforms to U.S. service members and allies. A full statement from Wichita State University can be found below.
