Man found dead after standoff in north central Kansas

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is working with the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office to investigate a situation that led to a standoff at a home near Glen Elder.

The KBI said Mitchell County deputies were sent to a home Saturday, October 23rd when a 78-year-old man said he was forcibly taken at gunpoint and held for 26 hours by another man.   An arrest warrant was issued and on Sunday a KBI team went to execute arrest and search warrants at the suspect’s home.   The man refused to come out and officers tried to communicate with him.    Two shots were heard around 4:30 Monday morning and a Kansas Highway Patrol response team was given control of the scene.  The KHP reported a gunshot inside the home around 8:30 and troopers went into the home to find the man dead in an upstairs room.

The man was identified as 59-year-old John Roudybush of Glen Elder.   The KBI said he died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, but an autopsy was ordered.  No shots were fired by any law enforcement officer during the standoff.
