Teenage girl fatally shot in north Wichita neighborhood

A teenage girl was fatally shot Sunday night outside a home in north Wichita, and another girl was injured.

Police said the shooting happened in the front yard of a home in the 900 block of North Volutsia around 10:30 Sunday night.   They found 18-year-old Brandi Williams in the front yard, and she was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.  Another 18-year-old girl was treated and released for gunshot wounds.

Police said a number of people, adults and juveniles, were at a gathering at the home when an argument started between the two girls and two teenage boys.   The boys brought out guns and started shooting.

Two boys, ages 16 and 14, were later taken into custody and they were booked in the Juvenile Detention Facility on murder charges.   Police said there are no other suspects in the case.

Police Chief Gordon Ramsay issued a statement saying ““While we have another sad and tragic life lost too soon, we’ve been highlighting the increase in juvenile crime for the last fifteen months.  Families and community members must take note of this disturbing trend and be as involved as possible to help keep our youth safe.”
