The Wichita Police Department is investigating an accidental shooting that killed a teenage boy.
Officers responded to a shots fired call at a home in the 1200 block of East Alta around 4:15 p.m. Saturday. There they found 14-year-old Forever Latham with a gunshot wound. He was taken to an area hospital but died from his injuries.
Authorities said Latham was in the bedroom of the home handling a firearm when it accidentally discharged. They reported that there were other people inside the home at the time of the incident, including the boy’s parents. They were not hurt.
WPD said that incidents like this are avoidable, and stressed to gun owners to always store guns unloaded and security locked. Use a gun case, safe, or lockbox. Be sure to store ammunition in a separate location, and talk to your children about gun safety.
