UPDATE: Police have identified the victim of a shooting Friday at a Wichita shopping mall, and a 16-year-old boy has been arrested for second degree murder.

Officers were called to Towne East Square at 5:30 p.m. and they found 14-year-old Trenjvious Hutton of Wichita.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Hutton got into a fight with several other teens as a result of an ongoing dispute.  One teen then pulled out a handgun and shot Hutton several times before running away.   Witnesses gave police a description of the teen and officers quickly took him into custody.  A 17-year-old boy was also taken into custody, questioned and then released.  Police recovered two handguns during the investigation.

Police are continuing the investigation and information will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office for formal charges.

Interim Police Chief Lem Moore issued a statement saying “Any death stemming from a shooting is traumatic for our community, especially when it involves one of our youths at a very busy shopping area.  WPD will be proactively providing extra resources at the shopping area to ensure safety of patrons and employees.”

Public Information Officer Chad Ditch said there was originally a call of an active shooter, but officers determined that this was not the case and there was no threat to the public.   The mall was closed while police conducted their investigation.
