Police are asking for help from the public in finding the gunman involved in a shooting in a south Wichita neighborhood.

Police said the shooting was reported around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 2100 block of South Ellis.   A man saw someone getting into a neighbor’s vehicle and begin rummaging around with a flashlight.  The man was shot when he confronted the intruder.

Detectives found that the suspect was walking south from the area of the 1700 block of South Greenwood Avenue late Tuesday and early Wednesday.   Police are asking for people in the neighborhood with Ring video cameras to look through their footage to see if the man appears.   They want to see video of anyone walking in the area, tampering with vehicles or checking vehicles for unlocked doors.

The suspect is described as white, 18 to 22 years of age, wearing a black hoodie, red pajama pants, black shoes and a blue surgical or COVID mask.   He was seen searching through unoccupied and unlocked vehicles in the area.    Police released a surveillance photo of the man.

Anyone with information should contact Detective Kevin McKenna at KMcKenna@wichita.gov or 268-4658.
