A former Kansas House member has decided not to serve as a new magistrate judge for Sedgwick County, and the state will be looking for applicants to fill the vacancy.

Jesse Burris of Mulvane was elected to the new judicial position in November, but he submitted a letter of resignation to the office of Kansas Governor Laura Kelly.

The governor is now asking for applicants to fill the position in the 18th Judicial District.    To be considered, an applicant must be:

  • a resident of Sedgwick County at the time of taking office and while holding office;
  • a graduate of a high school, a secondary school, or the equivalent; and
  • either a lawyer admitted to practice in Kansas or able to pass an examination to become certified within 18 months.

Applications will have to be submitted by April 21st.   Anyone wishing to apply should contact EricRorstrom@ks.gov for application materials.

The person chosen will serve until a successor is elected and qualified at the next general election to fill the remainder of Burris’ unexpired term.
