A judge in Shawnee County has issued a temporary injunction in a lawsuit filed by Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach over a new state law regarding driver’s licenses. The ruling holds that state driver’s licenses are required to list sex at birth and only sex at birth.
The Legislature passed a law in 2023 that included the requirement. Governor Laura Kelly announced that her administration did not intend to enforce the requirement, but the Attorney General’s office filed suit and a temporary restraining order was issued in July. A two-day trial was held in January and the Shawnee County District Court issued the temporary injunction on Monday, along with a memorandum decision in the case.
The ACLU of Kansas issued a statement expressing disappointment with the decision and said it was considering next steps in the case.
