Kansas lawmakers were unable to override a veto from Governor Laura Kelly on a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for anyone under the age of 18.

The override was approved in the Senate with a vote of 27-13, but it failed in the House with a vote of 82-43, two votes short of the needed two-thirds majority.

The bill would have blocked hormone therapy and other treatments for teenagers.  The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas had called the bill “one of the most extreme anti-trans laws in the country.”   ACLU executive director Micah Kubic said in a press release that the bill would have punished teachers and school counselors along with medical  professionals, mental health providers, social workers, and other state employees.

Republicans in the legislature had argued that the bill would protect teenagers from life-altering decisions that they could regret later.
