Today, I salute Veteran Don Overton. Thirty years after losing his sight in the Gulf War, Overton has regained independence using Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses. The voice-activated device can describe surroundings, read menus, recognize faces, and assist with navigation, greatly improving his daily life and easing the burden on his wife. Overton called the technology “revolutionary” after decades of less effective aids. Meta has partnered with the VA to provide the glasses to blind veterans, while sales have surged since the AI upgrade. The technology also highlights Meta’s broader push to expand AI tools for consumers and small businesses, emphasizing accessibility, innovation, and empowerment.
