Today, I salute Vietnam Veteran Oscar Bird. 78-year-old Bird is legally blind. He says weekly lunches with volunteer Marian Andeweg have become the highlight of his life. Through Senior Services North Fulton’s friendly visitor program, Andeweg began visiting Bird after volunteering with Meals on Wheels. What started as volunteer work quickly turned into a meaningful friendship. Because Bird cannot drive and spends much of his time alone at home, Andeweg’s visits provide companionship, support, and outings to favorite restaurants like Mika Sushi in Roswell. Bird said her presence helped him through depression, while Andeweg emphasized that programs supporting isolated seniors are essential and life-changing. Thank you for sharing the importance of connection, Oscar and Marian, and THANK YOU for your service.
