Today, the AWESOME comes from Wisconsin. For 14 years, Wisconsin teen Avant Williams promised his grandmother, Svala Heller, he would one day take her to prom. This spring, the 17-year-old made that childhood promise come true at La Crosse Central High School. Heller, who grew up in Iceland, where prom traditions are uncommon, had always dreamed of experiencing an American prom after seeing them in movies and on television. Williams treated the night as a full prom experience, taking photos and celebrating with friends. His best friend, Ruben Smith, even joined as Heller’s second date. Williams said fulfilling the promise meant everything because of the close bond he shares with his grandmother.
