Hantavirus is so last week. The World Health Organization has declared the Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern, after officials identified more than 250 suspected cases and 80 suspected deaths linked to the disease. At least 6 Americans have been exposed, with one showing symptoms. Health workers are racing to intensify screening and contact tracing efforts. The true scope of the outbreak could be much larger than initial reports, but not large enough to warrant a pandemic-level emergency, which would require closing international borders.
The risk for severe weather is high today, and Wichita and Sedgwick County are in the area of greatest chances for large, baseball-sized hail, damaging winds, and even a possible tornado or two.
And once you see it, you can’t unsee it, so much so that the team from Sesame Street has given scientists their blessing to name a newly discovered fish after Big Bird’s best friend, Mr. Snuffleupagus. The Snuffleupagus is a type of pipefish with orange, brown, and red shaggy, hair-like filaments all over its body that help keep it camouflaged in coral.
